Commercial printers should offer newspaper contracts - KBA
Press manufacturer KBA has claimed that the door is open for printers wanting to print newspapers overnight and continue producing commercial work during the day.
Following widespread investment from the UK's newspaper printing industry, large players such as Newsprinters and Trinity Mirror are fighting for contract print work to fill spare capacity.
However, speaking at Ifra Expo in Amsterdam, UK managing director Christian Knapp, told PrintWeek that there is a possibility for a commercial printer to turn that model on its head and become a contract newspaper printer.
He said: "I believe that someone with guts, balls and a bit of cash could easily set themselves up as a newspaper printer.
"With our Cortina press there is the possibility that a jobbing printer could produce flyers and similar work during the day, but print local newspapers overnight.
"Or, a guy that produces his own magazine or newspaper... somebody else does his work for him, but he could easily set up a press and print it himself."
Knapp added that there was still scope for local print sites to thrive in the UK, despite the current trend of moving production to supersites.
